Caring for Cut Flowers

Mr Ed (both light and dark flowers)
Peonies can last for up to two weeks in a vase if picked as a bud and kept in cool conditions.
When the stem is cut from the plant a seal is created over the wound very quickly to prevent water loss. Stems should be re cut before they are put in water. Always cut on a 45 degree angle to create a large surface area for uptake of water. Maximising the uptake of water will maintain freshness.
Peony blooms are very thirsty so keep an eye on water levels.
It is good practice to recut the stems and change the water every 2-3 days. Keep your vase of flowers out of direct sunlight and wind or draughts.
The peony flower is amazing in its ability to recover from lack of water. Even if a stem looks 'past it' with wilted leaves it may be able to be saved. Long distance travel can temporarily dehydrate the buds. Cut the stems and give the flowers a chance to take up some water. You will be suprised at how much the leaves freshen up and the bud looks as good as new!
